The Sunsationals Tap Dance Club makes
available quality senior adult tap dance classes from November through March
of each year. Whether you have a great deal of tap dance experience or none at all,
our proessional instructor, Stephani Szoki, will teach you not only how to
tap dance but how to perform. In addition to getting an aerobic workout, tap
dancing can improve your
coordination, concentration, stamina, balance and memory.
Many of our tap dancers took their first lesson after receiving their first
medicare check; others danced when they were youngsters. Only a few of
our dancers have danced most of their life. Our members range in age
from 55 to 83 and their skill levels vary widely. The only prerequisites
to becoming a Sunsationals dancers is
that you have a sense of rhythm, enjoy having fun and that you want to learn
to dance -- we can teach you the rest.
Tap classes meet with our instructor each Tuesday morning,
November through March, in the auditorium of Sunland Village East. Classes
are between 9:00 a.m and noon. The time commitment will vary depending on the
routines we are practicing and whether or not we are preparing for an upcoming
show. Usually our beginning tappers are alloted an hour each Tuesday to
practice the basics of tap. More advanced dancers are taught energetic and
creative routines that they perfect for performances. On Friday's dancers
practice from 9:00 a.m. to noon reinforcing what they learned from the
instructor during previous class.
Our current dues are $20 per month, November through March, and the dues
include the instructor's fee. The first lesson is usually free.
Dancers furnish their own shoes and from time to time are required to
purchase specific leotards, show tights and other personal performance
clothing. Members participate in fund raisers to help the Club
purchase matierial and accessories for costumes. Many of the costumes
are hand-made by a few members who possess (amazing) seamstress skills.
Tap dance classes are open to all residents of Sunland Village East
(Mesa, Arizona) and we also welcome seniors from the surrounding communities
to participate as guest members.
